1950's reference Imagery
I've compiled this page of images for us all to refer to as we discuss and conceptualize this piece (click on image for the link). I'll add more images as I find them.
A more detailed shot list
TITLE SCREEN
Establishing shot of mom and kid walking out of a retro style supermarket
Tracking shot of kid playing an imaginary spaceman with his toy laser gun, hiding behind obstacles, and scrambling about as he wages battle with invisible aliens. The boy interrupts his own game suddenly, when he notices something amazing in the foreground.
A glamor shot of the rocket ship ride reveals what has caught the boy's interest
Close up of the boys face, filled with awe and wonder
A second glamor shot of the rocket ship, which pans to focus on the coin slot
Another close up of the boy's face, as he grows even more excited about the prospect of experiencing the ride. Suddenly, his mother's hand grabs his shoulder, and drags him out of frame, as she continues toward the car.
Long shot of the boy digging in his heels, grabbing onto his mother's purse, and blocking her path as he frantically jumps up and down pointing to the rocket ship. Mother glances over, shakes her head "no", and continues walking.
Long shot of the boy leaping over to the rocket ship, gesturing at it wildly, caressing the craft in admiration, and finally falling on his knees, begging his mother for a quarter.
Medium shot of mother rolling her eyes, taking out her coin purse, and looking for a quarter.
The boy jumps up and down to celebrate this great victory, and immediately hops into the ship, bouncing about in eager anticipation
Mother discovers that she has no coins, and shrugs apologetically at the boy.
Still seated in the ship, the boy's body slumps, as he throws his head back and begins wailing.
Medium shot of mother, smiling sympathetically, as she gives a "hold on" sign, before returning to the store to make change the ride.
Once again, the boy is happy, and begins bouncing around in his seat again, as he admires the vehicle, and starts playing with various knobs and switches. Suddenly, a glass hatch slams over the boy, and seatbelt fastens around his shoulders. He looks around frantically, and starts banging on the glass as the ship pivots 90 degrees (pointing straight upward), and blasts off.
Close up of the boy screaming as the craft zooms away from earth. We see the world shrinking behind him in the background.
SPACE TRIP (TBD)
Ship re-appears outside the supermarket (looking a bit weathered), and the glass hatch and safety harnesses retract and vanish. The boy frantically stumbles out of the craft, still looking panicked, and at the same time completely dazed and confused. Once out of the ship, he realizes that he is safely back on earth, and begins kissing the ground and weeping with joy.
Long shot of supermarket doors swinging open, as the mother returns holding a quarter with a bright smile on her face. She he walks toward the camera to clearly show the coin. In the end, the shot is framed as a closeup that is essentially the kid's point of view.
Close up of the kids face, still looking dazed, yet a bit relieved to see his mother. He glances down at the quarter, begins shaking violently, then bolts off screen.
Long shot of the family car, parked at the curb. The boy runs into frame, yanks open the back door, jumps inside, puts on his seatbelt, and slams the door.
Close up of the mother as she does a confused take to the camera, shakes her head, and...
(long shot) pushes the cart out to the car following the boy. Pan back to the rocket ship in the foreground. Fade to black.

Concept Synoposis (rough):
RIDE
A mother pushes a full cart of groceries out of a market, when her six year old boy begins tugging at her purse. She turns around to see him gesturing with wild excitement at a shiny new coin operated machine - the "Intrepid 3000," a powerful looking rocket ship covered with flashing lights, knobs, dials, and switches. The boy hops into the rocket, and clasping his hands together pleads for a quarter. Reluctantly, the mother opens up her coin purse, only to discover that she is fresh out of quarters. Heart broken, the boy flops his head back and begins crying, with a look of such utter sadness and resignation that the mother decides to help find a solution. She holds up a finger indicating that she will be right back, and leaving her cart behind, scurries back into the market to get change from the cashier.
Realizing that his wish is about to come true, the boy begins bouncing around in the ship, randomly flicking knobs and switches, and frantically turning dials in anticipation of the ride he is about to experience. Suddenly, and without warning, a glass hatch slams shut over the boys head, a safety harness wraps itself around his shoulders, the rocket swivels back 90 degrees and fires straight off into the sky.
The following space journey is just a rough blueprint of what might happen as the rocket leaves earth. We are especially interested in soliciting additional story contributions for this part of the piece.
***
We cut to a closeup of the boy white knuckled, grabbing on to the dash of the rocket as he experiences G forces he has only dreamed of. In seconds, the boy is blasting out of our atmosphere, and heading straight towards a crowded asteroid field. In complete panic, he grabs the steering wheel, and by sheer chance narrowly avoids crashing into a slew of massive rocks. Eventually, he reaches the outer limits of our solar system, and continuing to accelerate, blasts past several new and unusual planets.
As he rockets past one strange new planet, we cut to a close up of an alien military recruit relaxing in his watch tower. Seeing the boy's rocket soaring nearby, he immediately hits the panic button, which sends a fleet of flying saucers chasing after the rocket, weapons ready.
By this point, the boy was just beginning to enjoy his flight, but his calm is shattered when he realizes that an army of aliens are in hot pursuit. He randomly hits a button on his dashboard which sends him into a violent corkscrew. A second button sends him into a series of insane loopdeloops. His evasive actions nearly succeed in shaking off the entire fleet of UFOs, when a third button stops the craft completely, shutting down the engine, and leaving him hovering in space like a sitting duck. The UFO fleet locates him immediately, and begins turning around and heading straight toward him. The boy frantically throws switches and turns knobs in a desperate attempt to escape once and for all. But despite all of his efforts, the only feedback he receives from his ship is a flashing light which reads "deposit 25 cents." The boy is convinced that he is doomed when at the last possible second, he pulls a strange hidden lever below the cockpit. Immediately, the dashboard lights flash on again, and the words "Entering Wormhole" appear on his cockpit display. In a sudden psychedelic flash of light, the boy and his craft stretch, twist, and vanish leaving behind a fleet of confused and disappointed aliens.

Back on earth, we cut to a shot outside the market, where the coin operated rocket once sat (though nobody seems to notice its absence). Without warning, the rocket ship materializes back on its pedestal, smoking, scratched, and visibly weathered from the journey. The glass hatch retracts, the shoulder harness unbuckles, and the boy leaps out of the craft and begins kissing the ground, and weeping, utterly relieved to be back on earth. At this moment, his mother returns, brandishing a shiny new quarter, and offers it to the boy with a look of satisfaction, fully expecting to quell his sadness. Seeing the coin, the boy begins shaking violently, waving his hands in fear, and bolts into their nearby car, fastening himself into his seatbelt and slamming the door behind him. Confused and bewildered, the mother shakes her head, pops the quarter back in her coin purse, and pushes her cart of groceries out to the car.
